Of my own volition? Well, I was told to come here, I guess, but I wasn’t against it or anything. I always wanted to travel and see more of the galaxy than just Khar’shan.

I figure there should be a lot of you, but I’ve only ever seen just the charity people who come help out at the camps and stuff. I guess maybe your people stay on the upper decks? Or maybe just steer clear of batarians, huh?

Beginning

They call her a “beginning agent.” Not recruit, not trainee. Beginning Agent. It sounds so distinguished, so formal. She’s sure Mam would be proud, if Mam were here to see.

It’s good she likes her job title because, so far, she doesn’t much like her job. These past weeks have been grueling, day after day of what Superior calls “briefing,” poring over documents, photos, dossiers. Memorizing faces. Names. Species. Statistics. Movements. Psych profiles.

She’s seen photos of every species her father ever told her about and many more he hadn’t. She’s learned to distinguish one member of a species from another—what makes Urdnot Grunt different from Urdnot Wrex, for example, and how to judge the age of an Asari.

Through it all, though, one dossier haunts her. One photo. Two eyes.

Human.

The human.

The human called Butcher of Torfan. The human who destroyed an entire system without batting an eye. The human that has the Hegemony scared.

The photo watches her from the walls of the briefing room, from the edges of her imagination, from across the galaxy.

And Pahly’a knows with utter certainty that, beginning agent or not, she will be the one to take Shepard down.

I do not see how that would be offensive. It may be more correct to ask for a name, as most have names rather than designations now, but that is a minor technicality.

I’ve never met a batarian before, but you don’t look scary. I know some things about your species, but we haven’t covered more than the basics in class. You’re not big like the krogan, so… -shrugs-

Yeah, but the Citadel has like 10 million people living on it. I don’t think he knows all of them.

Krogans are really big, yeah. Scary, too. But not mean, least not the ones I’ve met. Batarians aren’t as big, but they—we—come off as kinda mean a lot of the time, I guess.

I don’t see what the point is of being afraid of the the Batarians in the refugee slums. I mean, if any of them bother me, then I just show not to bother me. Easy. It’s all about having the cajones to actually show your face and not show any kind of fear. I have bigger things to fear anyways than just some Batarians.

Well it’s nice to you Polly. I don’t usually see very many Batarian females around here. How long have you been in the camps?

Oh, I wasn’t impressed by the tattoo! …Actually, it was kind of a tiny one, don’t you think? At least compared to the ones some people get that cover their whole backs and arms and stuff. Not that I think you couldn’t handle it or something! I saw you had lots of other tattoos already, so I…uh. Let me start that over.

I was impressed ‘cause you’re a human, and Alliance, no less, and you had the quad to walk into a batarian camp and be basically defenseless under a needle for a while. Without even looking nervous! Most people are either too scared or don’t trust batarians enough to do something like that. It’s why I remember you so well.

And, yeah, I only know of a couple of other females, and I’m by far the youngest. Actually I’m the youngest batarian at all in this part of the docks at least, though I think a few families have come in on recent refugee ships. I’ve been here for a few weeks now. This place was really scary and strange at first, but after a while, it kind of feels like a home.

What about you? Where do you stay? Or… I guess you’d be assigned to a ship, wouldn’t you?
